When is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

A tooth extraction is not the most exciting procedure to endure. It can seem quite alarming to need a tooth removed from your mouth. But, they are often times very necessary in order for dental health to remain in good shape. But, one question that a lot of people have is when are they actually required. Putting it simply, there are a number of reasons why a tooth extraction may be necessary!

Being aware of when tooth extractions are necessary can be helpful for someone who is not sure whether or not they are in need of one. This article outlines when tooth extractions are most often necessary. Keep reading to find out more.

Reasons to get a tooth extraction

Severe damage

Sometimes, people have such severe damage to their teeth that there is no hope other than to extract it. Typically, this severe damage is the result of long-term decay. This can be due to poor dental hygiene or excessive cavities. A tooth extraction will remove the dying tooth from the mouth so that the rest of the mouth can remain healthy.

Wisdom teeth

Another of the main reasons that tooth extraction is necessary is if the tooth is impacted. Wisdom teeth are most commonly known to become impacted because there usually is not enough room within a person’s mouth for them. Extracting the wisdom teeth is often necessary so that the surrounding teeth and gums stay healthy and do not become misaligned.

Gum disease

Sometimes gum disease becomes so severe that the teeth also become infected which can be very detrimental. Gum disease can go unnoticed because there are not always noticeable symptoms. This is why tooth extraction often becomes necessary. If a tooth becomes infected enough from the gum disease, then the only way to keep the rest of the mouth healthy is to pull the tooth out.

Reduction of crowding

There are times when tooth extraction is necessary just because there is not enough room within the mouth. Every person’s mouth is different and there are people who have mouths that are just too small for all of their teeth. In these cases, extraction is necessary so that overcrowding does not occur. Overcrowding could cause teeth to run into each other which may lead to severe pain, discomfort or even crookedness.

Another thing that most people do not think of when it comes to crowding of the teeth is that crowding can lead to cavities. When the teeth run into each other, there are often spaces that cannot be reached which causes a build up of leftover food particles.
