Many people who get dentures today are choosing implant supported dentures instead of traditional dentures. Traditional dentures are designed to securely fit over the gums in the mouth. On the other hand, implant supported dentures are supported by implants embedded in the jawbone. There are several reasons you should consider these types of dentures over traditional ones.
How do implant supported dentures work?
If a patient has enough bone in the jaw, a dentist can place implants in the bone of the jaw. This allows the bone to fuse to the implants, usually over several months. The implants will be secure and unmoving in the mouth. The two most common types of implant supported dentures are bar-retained dentures and ball-retained dentures.
Bar-retained dentures use a bar that follows the jaw’s curve to attach to implants in the jaw. The dentist will attach clips to this bar or the denture. The user can then fit the denture over the bar and clip it in place using the attachments.
Ball-retained dentures use a ball and socket system to attach the denture piece to the implant. Generally, the attachments on the implants are sockets, while the attachments on the denture are balls that fit in the sockets.
1. Implant supported dentures are more secure
Traditional dentures are held in place through the use of adhesives or suction. These types of dentures can shift while eating or even talking, creating an embarrassing moment for a patient. However, an implant supported denture means that people will not be able to tell the user is wearing dentures.
This can also make the denture wearer more confident. Because the dentures will not move, the patient will be able to smile, eat and speak easier. Implant supported dentures can also eliminate pronunciation errors caused by shifting dentures.
2. Implant supported dentures allow users to eat anything
With traditional dentures, denture wearers must take care to avoid extremely sticky or hard foods that can damage the denture. For example, it can be difficult or impossible to eat a whole apple or corn on the cob.
3. They reduce bone loss
When a patient loses teeth, the root of the tooth is also lost. Over a long amount of time, this can lead to bone loss in the jaw, leading to a changing facial shape. However, implants fuse to the bone in the jaw, acting as roots of the teeth. As the implants fuse to the jaw, the implants stimulate the bone. This prevents the bone from atrophying.
