So, you think you may need a Root Canal Treatment Before we proceed, you should know that timely root canal treatment can also save you from teeth removal and abscesses, which can happen if professional dental care is not sought in time. Read more on how you can be sure that your symptoms indicate the need for a root canal.
What is a root canal?
A root canal is often used to describe two situations: the interior portion of the tooth between the tooth pulp and the root, and the tooth treatment that focuses on extracting infected pulp material. Root canals contain blood vessels, tissues and nerves and are responsible for blood flow within the tooth and sensitivity.
Causes of root canal infection
Infections happen for multiple reasons, but the primary cause is the invasion of the pulp by bacteria. Various channels of entry can be open for infection and can include:
- Cracked or damaged tooth, which creates a path for bacterial infection
- Dental decay, which causes bacteria penetration
- Avulsed tooth
- Abnormality of the tooth anatomy
- Sterile necrosis resulting from tooth concussion
- Teeth displacements resulting from intrusion, extrusion or subluxation
- Recurrent dental restorations on a single tooth
When is a root canal necessary?
A professional dentist or endodontist can successfully diagnose conditions needing root canal treatment. Yet, patients can get ready by considering certain characteristics. The following are identifiable symptoms that may require root canal therapy:
Pain
Intense pain is not always an indication of root canal treatment. In fact, the affected tooth may not even hurt. Pain from pulp infection comes in any of the following forms:
- Pain intensity that changes with posture
- A pulsing headache
- Severe pain that prevents sleep
- A continuous or an intermittent toothache
- A toothache that persists after taking painkillers
- The affected tooth can be singled out
- Discomfort from touching, pressure or thermal changes
Every pain type could be a sign of root canal infection, and appropriate treatment is necessary. Other symptoms must be considered with the pain to determine the issue.
Inflammation and gum tenderness
Inflammation, coupled with any form of tooth pain, could be an indication of root canal infection. Inflammations appear differently and can be a mild tenderness or visible swelling. The following are signs that may indicate pulp infection:
- Gum boil on the root tip
- Gum swelling at the front of the root tip
- Swellings, either hardly noticeable or visible lump
- Prolonged swelling
- A foul odor emanating from the pus secreted by the root canal
- Affected tooth appears out of place
Even if the inflammation is not a sign of root canal infection, it could indicate another problem that requires medical attention. The dentist may prescribe antibiotics to manage the infection and reduce swelling.
A general feeling of illness
Fever and a general feeling of uneasiness are indicators of the need for endodontic surgery, especially when accompanied by other symptoms.
What is the bottom line?
