When you think of a smile makeover, the image of bright, white teeth may pop into your mind. Almost every adult experienced problems related to stained teeth in their lifetime. Factors like aging, hereditarily thin enamel, genetic tooth shade and every day habits can affect the color of your teeth.
What causes stained teeth?
As we age, the enamel on the teeth becomes porous. This effect even more when the teeth are not well cared for. Brushing and flossing can help keep teeth clean and stain-free, but staining can still occur despite your best efforts.
Habits like smoking and using alcohol can cause deep staining in the enamel. Certain medications can also cause teeth to darken in color. Coffee, tea and even darkly pigmented berries can speed up the yellowing process as well.
Treatments for a bright smile makeover
When daily brushing and flossing along with frequent dental cleanings are not enough to keep teeth pearly white, there are various smile makeover treatments that can help.
Whitening
Professional whitening treatments are the best way to guarantee a whiter smile. Keep in mind that only natural teeth will respond to whitening treatments. If there are crowns or veneers present, they will not become whiter with teeth bleaching treatments.
The whitening procedure is one of the least expensive and most effective in cosmetic dentistry. In-office whitening treatments usually take the form of a whitening agent (normally a gel substance) applied directly to the surface of the teeth. A clear, custom-made plastic tray is sometimes used to make sure the right amount of bleaching agent reaches the teeth.
While at-home whitening treatments are less expensive, they will not last as long as any professional whitening treatment. Additionally, in-office whitening treatments can last for one year or longer, while do-it-yourself whitening fades much quicker.
The treatment will take about 1-2 hours in just one visit. After a whitening treatment, patients can keep their teeth brilliant for longer by avoiding stain-worthy substances.
Veneers
Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are custom-created for each patient. Veneers are directly bonded to the front of teeth to create a personalized, beautiful smile. Because they cover the entire front of the tooth, these shells can also be used to cover other imperfections in the smile for a full smile makeover. For example, if a discolored tooth is also somewhat misshapen, the patient can choose to alter the shape as well as the shade.
Deeply stained or grey teeth that do not respond to whitening are often still good candidates for veneers.
Crowns
If one or more teeth stand out from the rest of the smile due to their darkened color, a crown may help. A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a prepared tooth to restore its shape, stability and color. Most crowns are made from porcelain, a durable, stain-resistant material that closely mimics a natural tooth.
