Sometimes a tooth can get severely fractured or damaged due to either trauma or injury. In other cases, the tooth has decayed so much that using a filling is almost impossible because much of the tooth structure is lost, making the tooth prone to breakage or damage. In any of these situations, the dentist may recommend dental crowns and bridges to improve your dental health and enhance your smile.

Patients who have just gone through root canal treatment or dental implants would need dental crowns to complete the treatment process. The result of the restoration is based mainly on the expertise and artistry of the cosmetic dentist. The crown color and shape is essential because it must blend seamlessly with other teeth.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns are fixed prosthetic devices manufactured from materials like porcelain and are used to “cap” or cover the teeth. They are usually used as a substitute for teeth, since they can function and appear like a natural tooth, ensuring that you can once again chew and bite normally.

Dental crowns can also be fused to bridges, cover implants (with abutments), fortify a cracked tooth against further damage or strengthen an existing filling that could become unstable or dislocated. They also have aesthetic purposes, as they can be used to restore a discolored or stained tooth to its original appearance.

Procedure

To accept a dental crown, the affected tooth must be scraped. The dentist will then create an impression using the existing tooth to mold a bespoke crown. The impression is then forwarded to a dental lab where the custom crown will be designed. In some instances, the dentist may place a makeshift crown before the permanent crown is ready. When the permanent crown is available, it will be bonded into position.

People sometimes confuse crowns with veneers, but they are not the same thing. Veneers are only usable on limited parts of the teeth.

Bridges

Bridge are dental devices with a natural appearance that substitutes for part of a missing tooth. They can restore the original contour of the teeth and proper alignment of the lower and upper teeth. They are designed specifically for each patient and are therefore hardly noticeable.

Bridges are often called fixed partial dentures because they are almost permanent and are attached to preexisting implants or teeth. Types of fixed dental bridges include traditional fixed bridges, resin-bonded bridges and cantilever bridges. In contrast to removable bridges, which you can remove to clean, only a dentist can take out a fixed bridge. Materials used in creating bridge devices include porcelain, gold alloys, metals or a combination of these materials.

Caring for your dental crowns and bridges

With adequate care, a high-quality crown should be usable for at least eight years or more. It is essential to floss the sides of the crown to prevent accumulation of plaque or debris around the restoration.

Specific actions such as bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw clenching can significantly lessen the lifetime of a crown or bridge. Also, consuming ice, hard candies or brittle food can affect the adhesives used to seal the crown or bridge and can even damage the restoration.
